Alyson Hanningon was born as the daughter of Emilie Posner and Al Hannigan. Her father is a truck driver of Irish descent, while his mother, who is of Jewish descent, worked as a real estate agent. Her parents divorced, just one year after Alyson was born and as such she was mostly raised up by her mother in Atlanta even though she visited her father quite frequently.
While living in Atlanta, she studied at the North Hollywood High School from where she graduated in 1992. She later continued her higher studies at California State University, in Northridge, where she majored in Psychology.
She played clarinet in her junior high school and also played soccer until her teenage, when she had to quit the game due to an injury. Her love for tattoos is evident from the fact that she has the tattoo of tribal dolphins on her ankle, a Japanese kanji that is supposed to bring luck and happiness, on her back and a cartoon turtle on her left foot. She is also a spokesperson for breast cancer.
Although, Alyson dated Ginger Fish for some time, she eventually went on to marry actor Alexis Denisof. The couple was married at Two Bunch Palms Resort in Desert Hot Springs, California on October 11, 2003. They welcomed their first child, a baby girl whom they named Satyana Denisof, on 24th March 2009, which was also the 35th birthday of Hanningon.
Although, Alyson had a brush with acting when she was still a baby, and later at the age of four when she appeared in commercials for companies like such as McDonald’s, Six Flags, and Oreos. However, her real acting career started only after she moved from Atlanta to Los Angeles in 1985. It was only then that she gave successful auditions for agents.
Since then Alyson, has moved on to become a seasoned and veteran actress who has portrayed varying characters in more than twenty shows and nine movies. Her most prominent shows on television include Free Spirit, Almost Home, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, King of the Hill, Veronica Mars, How I Met Your Mother and The Goode Family, etc.
Alyson has also been successful in weaving her magic on the audiences of the big screen. Millions of fans have been floored by her histrionics in movies like, Impure Thoughts, Dead Man on Campus, Boys and Girls, American Pie 2, American Wedding and Date Movie, etc. In addition, she has also contributed in the soundtrack of the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
For her wonderful contribution to the entertainment industry, Alyson has been bestowed with two prestigious awards and has also been nominated to eleven other awards. In 2003, she won the Saturn Award at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA, under the category of Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series for her work in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In 2002, she won the Teen Choice Award, under the category of TV - Choice Sidekick for her role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Alyson has also been nominated once each for Golden Satellite Award and TV Guide Award, twice for Young Artist Award and Saturn Award at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA, besides having been nominated for four times for the Teen Choice Awards.
Role In How I Met Your Mother
In How I Met Your Mother, Alyson plays the role of lily Aldrin. She is the wife of Marshall Eriksen and works as a kindergarten teacher. She dreams of being an artist and even paints a nude portrait of Barney. Her impulsive buying habits have created an enormous debt problem for her. However, she is able to keep this a secret from Marshall, who learns about her debts only when they apply for mortgage.
